What is High Pressure Die Casting?

High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) is when molten metal is forced at high speed and high pressure into the cavity of a closed die. The die is locked tightly in place by powerful closing forces applied by the horizontal HPDC machine used. Once the metal has solidified, the die is released, and the casting is ejected.

Do I need a hot or cold chamber solution?

Hot chamber die casting is only suitable for metal alloys with a low melting point, so if you work with aluminium or magnesium, you need a cold chamber HPDC process.

The forces applied to the die are critical to achieving a tight seal and casting precision. The bigger the part, the greater the pressure needed to guarantee accurate die closure.

With large ‘single piece’ castings increasingly popular - especially in automotive - HPDC machines able to deliver massive closing forces are often preferable.

Our Giant HPDC machines deliver closing forces up to 11,000 tonnes!

Do I need a Toggle Free HPDC machine?

That depends. As the name suggests, Toggle Free HPDC machines have no toggle.

Because of this, they typically have a smaller machine footprint, greater rigidity and fewer wear parts for improved reliability and lower maintenance costs, they tend to be a preferable choice where closing forces of more than 1,650 tonnes are required.
